Best of 2015 Part 3: 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

The 2016 edition of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die is the 13th edition of the film book and adds 10 new films from 2015 to book that its crew has deemed essential. However, to keep it at 1001 films of course 10 films would need to be removed as well. Typically the films added are from the preceding year that was popular at that time and therefore added to make the book appear up to date. Those removed are usually from the most recent few years. As you can see, most just had a buzz that over time has dropped off and so has the film. Overall, what is really interesting is what films stay on from the last few years.

In the 2016 edition the new films are:

• The Revenant (2015)
• Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
• Son of Saul (2015)
• Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
• Straight Outta Compton (2015)
• Tangerine (2015)
• The Big Short (2015)
• Bridge of Spies (2015)
• The Look of Silence (2014)
• Spotlight (2015)

The films removed are: 

• Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) - lasted 4 years in the book
• Senna (2010) - lasted 4 years in the book
• Drive (2011) - lasted 4 years in the book
• Amour (2012) - only lasted 3 years in the book
• Django Unchained (2012) - only lasted 3 years in the book
• The Act of Killing (2012) - only lasted 3 years in the book
• The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - only lasted 2 years in the book
• Theory of Everything (2013) - only lasted 2 years in the book
• Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)  - only lasted 1 year in the book
• Citizenfour (2014) - only lasted 1 year in the book

As you can see only the top three films above were able to last a few years in the book while the rest can be a victim of fad of the time. 

In 2013, the book did get a considerable overhaul where a number of films were added and removed. But what films have stayed on since 2014 and challenged the test of time? These are the ones that probably deserve the most attention:
